BUMC has four missions initiatives: Housing, Healing, Hunger, and Human Development. These initiatives provide a framework for us to forge relationships and have a deep impact in our community, both locally and around the world.
The Housing Initiative provides a framework for us to help our neighbors have a place to call home and that local ministries have spaces to flourish. This lay-led ministry recruits and empowers our members to serve and address the need for affordable housing, for schools for vulnerable children, for playgrounds in low-income neighborhoods, for the repair of our neighbors’ homes, for spaces for effective ministry, and for the refurbishment of worn-out United Methodist Churches that are engaged in mission with their neighbors. As a church, we value these spaces as avenues for making disciples of Christ for the transformation of individuals, families, communities, and ultimately our world.
The Healing Initiative stands in solidarity with those people who suffer in body and mind. Healing the sick was a cornerstone of Jesus’ ministry. At BUMC we take this call to heal as the foundation to our mission of making disciples for the transformation of our world. The Healing Initiative connects our church to organizations and clinics that are working to provide healthcare to Communities with limited medical resources locally and globally. This lay-led ministry matches the passions and skills of our congregation to provide hope and healing for our neighbors near and far.
The Hunger Initiative joins with our neighbors to ensure that all stomachs are filled with wholesome foods. Through the Hunger Initiative, we strive to become disciples of Jesus Christ by obeying Christ’s command to feed the hungry and spread Christ’s message by meeting the most basic needs of life. Church members give of their time and gifts to support food drives and feeding ministries with our partner agencies and schools both locally and globally. As a church we believe that access to plentiful, healthy food is at the center of Christian ministry.
Human Development is a core BUMC missional initiative by which we journey with individuals and communities in the work of holistic transformation. This extends to all dimensions of life, such as education, economic, personal, communal and spiritual transformation. Ultimately, we strive to live into our God given potential. The human development initiative is a collaborative effort to engage in ongoing transformative and measurable ministries that move all the people involved - both the helpers AND the helped – closer to being in right relationship with God, self, others, and the rest of creation. Development is not done to or for people, but with people.
